The Corfu Declaration of 1917

The decision to create the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes — the foundation of the future Yugoslavia.

The Corfu Declaration was signed on 20 July 1917 on the island of Corfu between the Serbian government and representatives of the South Slavic peoples of Austria-Hungary.

Content

The declaration agreed on the creation of a future common state of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes under the Karađorđević dynasty.

Significance

This was the basis for the later formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918.

Controversies

The declaration later became the subject of disputes over the nature of the future state — whether it should be centralised or federal.
