The Markale Massacre in Sarajevo

A shell on the Markale market - 68 civilians dead in one of the most brutal attacks during the siege of Sarajevo.

On 5 February 1994, a mortar shell fell on the Markale market in the centre of Sarajevo in the middle of the day.

Number of victims

In the attack 68 civilians were killed and 144 wounded. People were buying groceries when the shell fell into the middle of the crowd.

Reaction

This massacre shocked the world and contributed to the introduction of NATO sanctions. It was one of the most tragic moments of the siege of Sarajevo.

Second attack

On 28 August 1995, another shell struck Markale, killing 43 people. These attacks laid bare the cruelty of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
