Milunka Savić (1888–1973) was a Serbian soldier and the most decorated woman in the history of world warfare.
Her Wartime Path
She took part in the Balkan Wars disguised as a man in order to be with her brother. When she was discovered, she displayed such courage that she was allowed to remain in the army.
Decorations
She was a recipient of the Order of the Star of Karađorđe, the Gold Medal of the Legion of Merit, the French Legion of Honour, the Russian Cross of St. George and many others.
After the War
After the war she worked as a cleaner. She died in poverty in 1973, but was buried with the highest military honours.
