Operation Storm - the Expulsion of Serbs from Krajina

The Croatian military operation that resulted in the largest ethnic cleansing in Europe after the Second World War.

Operation Storm was carried out from 4 to 7 August 1995. The Croatian army attacked the Republic of Serbian Krajina and occupied the territory within three days.

Ethnic cleansing

During and after the operation, over 250,000 Serbs were driven from homes their families had held for centuries. The elderly, women and children fled on tractors and in carts.

Crimes

Mass crimes were committed against the remaining Serbian civilians - over 2,000 people were killed, mostly elderly people who could not flee. Serbian villages were systematically set on fire.

Justice

Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač were convicted in The Hague, but the verdict was later overturned and they were acquitted.
