A commander of the First Serbian Uprising who ignited the gunpowder at Čegar rather than surrender.
Stevan Sinđelić was a commander (vojvoda) of the First Serbian Uprising and one of the greatest Serbian heroes.
The Battle of Čegar
On 31 May 1809 he defended the earthwork with 3,000 insurgents against 20,000 Ottomans.
The heroic sacrifice
When he realized that the position would fall, he ignited the gunpowder and blew himself, his men and the Ottomans into the air.
Legacy
"Better a grave than a slave" - a symbol of Serbian resistance.
