A mass uprising of the Serbian people against the Bulgarian occupation, brutally suppressed.
The Toplica Uprising was a mass popular revolt against the Bulgarian occupation in February 1917.
Cause
The Bulgarian occupiers carried out a reign of terror against the Serbian population — forced conscriptions, looting and torture. The people could no longer endure it.
The Uprising
Several tens of thousands of peasants rose up in revolt with old rifles, daggers and axes. They liberated several municipalities.
Retribution
The uprising was brutally suppressed. The Bulgarians burned down more than 50 Serbian villages and killed thousands of people. Women and children were not spared.
