June 1999-March 2004: Albanians destroyed 150+ Serbian Orthodox churches, monasteries, and cemeteries. UNESCO monuments (14th century) - burned, mined, turned into toilets. Aim: to erase all traces of Serbian history in Kosovo. KFOR/UNMIK watched and allowed it. March 2004 pogroms - 35 churches destroyed in 48 hours. This is cultural genocide - the systematic destruction of Serbian culture.
Destruction of Serbian heritage in Kosovo
June 1999-March 2004: Albanians destroyed 150+ Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries in Kosovo. Among them was UNESCO World Heritage (medieval monasteries from the 14th century).
Methods: burning, mining, dynamite, desecration (turning them into toilets, bars, farms).
Aim: To erase ALL traces of Serbian history in Kosovo. If there are no Serbian churches, there is no evidence that Serbs lived there for centuries.
KFOR/UNMIK: Watched and allowed it. Only after 2004 did they begin to "protect" (too late).
Serbian position: This is cultural genocide - the systematic destruction of Serbian culture. Albanians not only drive out Serbs (exodus), but also erase ALL evidence that Serbs ever lived there. Genocide against culture.

🏛️ The most significant destroyed Serbian monuments
| Monument | Century | Date of destruction | Method |

| Monastery of the Holy Archangels (Prizren) | 14th century (Stefan Dušan) | 30 June 1999 | Mined, completely razed |
Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš (Bogorodica Ljeviška) (Prizren):
- Built in the 14th century (King Stefan Milutin)
- UNESCO World Heritage (fresco masterpieces)
- 17 March 2004 - an Albanian mob set the church on fire (KFOR 200m away - DID NOT RESPOND)
- Result: frescoes damaged, walls blackened by smoke, cross toppled
Monastery of the Holy Archangels (Prizren):
- Built 1343-1352 (Emperor Stefan Dušan - the most powerful Serbian ruler)
- Planned to be buried there (like Hilandar)
- 30 June 1999 - Albanians mined the monastery (dynamite, completely razed)
- 2004 - on the ruins of the monastery Albanians build a PARKING LOT
Symbolism: Stefan Dušan - the strongest Serbian emperor in history (1346-1355, "Emperor of the Serbs and Greeks"). His monastery razed, a parking lot on top of it. The Albanians' message: "Serbia was never here."
🗓️ Chronology of the destruction (1999-2004)
| Period | Events |
|---|---|
| June-July 1999 | First phase - 50+ churches burned/mined (Priština, Peć, Prizren, Đakovica) |
| August-December 1999 | Second phase - 60+ churches in villages destroyed (villages ethnically cleansed of Serbs) |
| 2000-2003 | Continuous desecration, burning, mining (another 25+ churches) |
| 17-18 March 2004 | POGROMS - 35 churches destroyed in 48 hours (the largest wave of destruction) |
March 2004 pogroms - the worst wave:
- 17-18 March 2004 - organized Albanian pogroms (50,000+ Albanians attack Serbian enclaves)
- 35 churches destroyed in 48 hours
- 19 Serbs killed, 900+ wounded
- 4,100 Serbs driven from their homes
- KFOR (17,000 soldiers in Kosovo) - DID NOT RESPOND adequately
📸 Desecration - not only destruction
Albanians did not only destroy churches - they also shamed them:
| Church | Desecration |
|---|---|
| Church of St. Nicholas (Peć) | Turned into a public toilet |
| Church of St. Peter (Priština) | Turned into a bar (selling alcohol) |
| Zočište Monastery | Turned into a farm (keeping pigs - an insult to Christians) |
| Church of St. George (Uroševac) | Graffiti: "UCK" (KLA), Albanian flag drawn on the walls |
Turning churches into toilets, bars, farms - the aim is humiliation, not only destruction. The message: "Your faith is worth nothing."
⚖️ UNESCO, UNMIK - powerless or uninterested?
UNESCO (organization for the protection of world heritage):
- 1999-2004 - REMAINED SILENT while the churches burned
- 2004 - finally places 4 monasteries under protection (TOO LATE - 150+ already destroyed)
- 2006 - report: "The destruction of Serbian heritage in Kosovo is systematic and deliberate."
UNMIK (UN administration of Kosovo):
- 1999-2004 - documented 150+ destroyed churches
- Arrested: 5 Albanians (for the destruction of 150+ churches!)
- Convicted: 2 Albanians (sentences of 1-2 years)
KFOR (NATO troops - 17,000 soldiers in Kosovo):
- Mandate: "Maintaining order, protecting all peoples"
- Reality: WATCHED while the churches burned (often bases 200-500m from the church)
- March 2004 - 17,000 KFOR soldiers did not stop the destruction of 35 churches in 48 hours
Serbian question: "Where were KFOR, UNMIK, UNESCO while our churches burned? They had 17,000 soldiers and allowed 150+ churches to be destroyed. That is not powerlessness - that is PERMISSION."
🇷🇸 Serbian perspective - cultural genocide
For the Serbian people, the destruction of churches is:
- CULTURAL GENOCIDE - the systematic erasure of Serbian culture
- GENOCIDE AGAINST HISTORY - Albanians erase the evidence that Serbs lived there for centuries
- RUTHLESS HATRED - not only driving out Serbs, but also destroying EVERYTHING they left behind
- NATO/KFOR RESPONSIBILITY - allowed the destruction
"150+ Serbian churches and monasteries destroyed (1999-2004). Many from the 14th century - UNESCO monuments. Albanians burned them, mined them, turned them into toilets. KFOR watched. This is not vandalism - this is cultural genocide. The aim: to erase ALL traces of Serbian history in Kosovo. As if Serbs had never been there. BUT WE WERE. And Kosovo IS THE HEART OF SERBIA - forever. WE WILL NEVER FORGET."
