The Albanian Golgotha

The harrowing retreat of the Serbian army and people across Albania - over 150,000 dead.

The Albanian Golgotha was the retreat of the Serbian army, government and part of the civilian population across Albania in the winter of 1915/1916.

Conditions

The Serbian army and civilians retreated through uninhabited mountains in the worst winter conditions. People died of hunger, cold, typhus and dysentery. Albanian tribes attacked the exhausted column.

Casualties

Of the roughly 220,000 soldiers and 20,000 civilians who set out, between 150,000 and 200,000 people perished. Their bodies were left along the road through the mountains of Albania.

Corfu

The survivors were evacuated by Allied ships to Corfu, where the army recovered and reorganised.
