On 4 May 1999, NATO bombed Constantine the Great Airport in Niš, but the missiles also hit civilian settlements nearby.

Targeting the airport and the surrounding villages

Although the target was the military airport, the missiles hit:

  • The airport (a military target)
  • The village of Gornji Matejevac
  • The village of Popovac
  • An industrial zone

Civilian victims

6 civilians from the surrounding villages were killed:

  • Milovan Petrović (68 years old, farmer)
  • Dragica Petrović (65 years old, his wife)
  • Nikola Đorđević (52 years old)
  • Svetlana Nikolić (44 years old)
  • Dragan Marković (38 years old)
  • Jovanka Stanković (61 years old)

Mass evacuation

Several thousand people from the surrounding villages were evacuated after the attack. Many lived in improvised shelters for weeks.
