The Bombing of the Grdelica Gorge

NATO aircraft struck a passenger train carrying civilians; at least 20 people were killed.

On 12 April 1999, an American F-15E struck a passenger train that was crossing a railway bridge in the Grdelica Gorge.

A double strike

The pilot first struck the bridge while the train was on it. Then, as survivors were trying to save themselves, he fired a second missile. This points to the deliberate targeting of civilians.

Victims

At least 20 civilians were killed and a large number wounded. NATO claimed that the train had been "collateral damage".

Video footage

NATO released a video that had been sped up threefold in order to "prove" that the pilot had not seen the train. Independent analyses revealed the manipulation.
