The Bombing of the Chinese Embassy

The NATO bombing of the embassy of the People's Republic of China in Belgrade — a violation of international law and the killing of three Chinese citizens.

On 7 May 1999, American bombers struck the embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Belgrade.

Violation of international law

The attack on the embassy constitutes a gross violation of international law and of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. NATO claimed that it had been a "mistake".

Victims

Three Chinese citizens were killed in the attack — the journalists Shao Yunhuan and Xu Xinghu, together with Xu's wife Zhu Ying. Twenty people were wounded.

Protest

China protested sharply, and its ambassador to the UN walked out of a session of the Security Council in protest. The incident seriously damaged relations between China and NATO.
