The Bombing of Novi Pazar - Attacks on Sandžak

NATO bombs civilian facilities in Novi Pazar. A mosque was damaged, 2 civilians were killed - both Muslims.

On 30 March 1999, NATO bombed Novi Pazar, the center of Sandžak with a majority Muslim population.

Targeting a Muslim City

Ironically, NATO, which claimed to be "protecting Muslims in Kosovo", bombed Novi Pazar, where a majority Muslim population lives. The facilities struck:

  • Civilian infrastructure in the city center
  • The Altun Alem mosque (damaged)
  • Commercial buildings
  • Residential buildings

Victims

2 civilians were killed, both Muslims:

  • Emir Softić (41 years old, a merchant)
  • Rifat Huseinović (58 years old, a craftsman)
Over 10 people were wounded.

The Outrage of the Muslim Community

The Mufti of Novi Pazar, Muamer Zukorlić, stated: "How can NATO claim to protect Muslims when it bombs Muslim cities and kills Muslim civilians? This is hypocrisy of the highest order."

Damage to Religious Buildings

The Altun Alem mosque, a cultural monument from the 16th century, was damaged by secondary explosions. The minaret was partially destroyed.
