Bombing of Palilula in Belgrade - mass civilian casualties

NATO bombs residential blocks in Palilula, Belgrade. 13 civilians killed, the highest number in a single attack on Belgrade.

On 13 May 1999, one of the greatest tragedies in Belgrade occurred - the bombing of residential blocks in Palilula, where 13 civilians were killed.

Night attack on residential settlements

The attack was carried out at 2:30 in the morning when people were asleep. The missiles hit:

  • A residential block in Borča
  • High-rise buildings in the centre of Palilula
  • The "Jovan Jovanović Zmaj" school

Victims - entire families

13 civilians were killed:

  • The Petrović family (4 members - parents and two children)
  • The Nikolić family (3 members)
  • Other victims (6 people)
The youngest victim was 4 years old, the oldest 72.

No military targets

Within a 2 km radius there was not a single military facility. This was a pure attack on the civilian population.

Panic in Belgrade

After this attack, many residents of Belgrade left the city and went to smaller towns or abroad.
