On 1 June 1999, NATO bombed the oil refinery in Novi Sad, causing a massive ecological catastrophe.

Black cloud over the city

The explosion of the refinery created an enormous black cloud of smoke that covered Novi Sad and its surroundings. The air was unbreathable for days.

Victims

5 workers were killed:

  • Milan Jovanović (48 years old)
  • Dragan Petrović (52 years old)
  • Goran Nikolić (39 years old)
  • Slobodan Marković (55 years old)
  • Nebojša Đorđević (44 years old)

Pollution of the Danube

The oil poured into the Danube, creating a floating layer stretching tens of kilometers. A massive die-off of fish.
