A NATO strike on the building of Radio Television of Serbia in which 16 civilians — journalists and technicians — were killed.
On 23 April 1999, NATO aircraft struck the building of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) in the centre of Belgrade. Sixteen people were killed in the attack — journalists, technicians, and other staff.
Targeting civilians
The attack was carried out at a time when it was known that civilian staff were inside the building. NATO claimed that RTS was a "legitimate target" because it broadcast "propaganda".
Victims
Among the 16 killed were young journalists, camera operators, and technicians — civilians doing their jobs. The youngest victim was 26 years old.
Legal accountability
No one responsible for this attack was brought to justice. The International Court of Justice rejected Serbia's suit against NATO.
