The Ćele-kula (the Skull Tower) is a unique and gruesome monument, a tower built from the skulls of Serbian insurgents who fell in the Battle of Čegar in 1809.

Construction

After the Battle of Čegar, the Turks built the tower from the skulls of the fallen insurgents as a warning to future rebels. The tower held 952 skulls.

Today

The tower is protected by a special chapel. Fifty-eight skulls have been preserved. It stands as a symbol of Serbian resistance and sacrifice for freedom.

Significance

The Ćele-kula is a cultural monument of exceptional importance, unique in the world. It is a reminder of the price of freedom.
