An Ustaše camp for Serbian children in which more than 1,000 children perished — the youngest victims of the genocide in the NDH.
At Jastrebarsko near Zagreb, the Ustaše established a camp exclusively for Serbian children. This was one of the most horrific crimes of the NDH.
Conditions
The children were held in appalling conditions, without food, medicine, or basic hygiene. They died of starvation, typhus, and other diseases, as well as from abuse.
Number of victims
It is estimated that more than 3,500 children passed through the camp, and that over 1,000 of them perished. The youngest victims were only a few months old.
Remembrance
A memorial plaque now stands at the site of the camp. The names of many of the children who died are not even known, because they had been taken from mothers who were sent to the death camps.
