NATO cluster bombs struck a market and a hospital in Niš; 16 civilians were killed.
On 7 May 1999, cluster bombs fell on the centre of Niš, striking the city market and the Clinical Centre.
Banned munitions
Cluster bombs are especially dangerous because they scatter into hundreds of smaller bombs over a large area. Many do not explode immediately and remain dangerous for years.
Victims
Sixteen civilians were killed and over 70 wounded at the market and in the surrounding area. Among the victims were people who were buying groceries at that moment.
Consequences
Some of the bombs did not explode and had to be cleared over the course of months. Civilian infrastructure was heavily damaged.
