The largest monument to a massacre of civilians in occupied Europe - 7,000 shot in October 1941.
Šumarice is the place where, on 21 October 1941, the Germans shot around 7,000 civilians, including pupils of the Kragujevac grammar school.
Reprisal
As a reprisal for an attack on German soldiers, the occupiers shot all the men and boys they found in the town. Among the victims were pupils and teachers of the entire grammar school.
