Petrovaradin Fortress - the Gibraltar on the Danube

A monumental Baroque fortress, witness to numerous historical events.

Petrovaradin Fortress is one of the best-preserved Baroque fortresses in Europe.

History

It was built in the 18th century after the liberation from the Turks. It was a key defence of the Habsburg Monarchy.

The Battle of Petrovaradin, 1716

Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated the Turkish army here, which marked the beginning of the end of Turkish rule in this region.

Today

The fortress is a cultural and historical landmark with museums and galleries.
