A monumental work by Ivan Meštrović dedicated to all unknown Serbian soldiers.
The Monument to the Unknown Hero was erected in 1938 on Avala to a design by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
Symbolism
Eight caryatids in traditional folk costumes represent the regions from which the fighters came. In the crypt lies the symbolic grave of the Unknown Hero.
Material
Built of black granite, the monument radiates strength and dignity. The height of the monument is 18 metres.
Today
The most visited memorial in Serbia, a place of remembrance and of paying homage to all fallen fighters.
