Major Dragutin Dimčevski — The Man Who Took Command of the Defence

When the attack on Košare began on 9 April 1999, Major Dragutin Dimčevski, deputy commander of the 53rd Border Battalion, took direct command of the outpost's defence. With around one hundred and thirty soldiers he organised the resistance in the most critical first hours of the battle.

In every battle there comes a moment when everything depends on the composure of a single man. At Košare, at dawn on 9 April 1999, that man was Major Dragutin Dimčevski. His calm and his leadership in the first, most chaotic hours of the attack determined that the defence did not break at the very outset.

The Deputy Who Took Command

Major Dragutin Dimčevski was the deputy commander of the 53rd Border Battalion of the Priština Corps. When, on 9 April, the enemy opened artillery fire and launched an attack from three directions, the situation at the outpost became critical in the extreme. Some of the officers were wounded in the very first onslaughts, and the chain of command was put to the test.

As the senior in rank among the officers present, Major Dimčevski took direct command of the defence of Košare. Under his command were around one hundred and thirty soldiers — mostly young men serving their military term — who had to withstand the blow of fifteen hundred attackers.

Organising the Resistance

Under conditions of unceasing shelling and infantry assaults, Major Dimčevski organised the defence, deployed the men across the positions and kept contact with the command to bring in reinforcements. His task was to prevent the defence from disintegrating before help arrived.

Thanks to firm command, the defenders of Košare, though forced to abandon the highest positions, preserved the core of the defence and the second line. The very next day reinforcements from the 125th Mechanized Brigade began to arrive, and the front gradually stabilised. Had the first day's defence not held, the reinforcements would have had no one to reach.

Recognition for Heroism

The role of Major Dimčevski in the defence of Košare remained for years known chiefly to the participants of the battle and to a narrow circle of the public. In time, his contribution received official recognition as well. On the occasion of the anniversary of the battle in 2020, he was decorated with the Order of the White Eagle with Swords — one of the highest military decorations — for the courage and leadership he showed in the defence of Košare.

In his later testimony, Dimčevski always emphasised the heroism of ordinary soldiers, the young men who remained at their positions when it was hardest. The modesty with which he spoke of his own role only deepened the respect toward him.

The Man of the Right Moment

Battles are won by the courage of soldiers, but also by the wisdom and composure of commanders. Major Dragutin Dimčevski was the right man in the right place at the moment when the defence of Košare hung by a thread. His decision to take command and his ability to hold the line in the first hours of the attack deserve a lasting place in the story of Košare.

Without officers like him, the heroism of the soldiers would have been left without support. Lest it be forgotten.
