Major Nebojša Nikolić — the pilot who returned from captivity

Major Nebojša Nikolić was a Serbian pilot whose MiG-29 was shot down on 2 May 1999. He ejected, survived, but was captured. His story of survival and return became a symbol of a pilot's endurance.

Major Nebojša Nikolić was a MiG-29 pilot in the Air Force of the Yugoslav Army. On 2 May 1999, his aircraft was shot down during a combat flight over Kosovo. Unlike many of his comrades, Major Nikolić managed to eject and survive — but a new struggle for survival on the ground awaited him.

The combat flight of 2 May

In the sixth week of the NATO aggression, despite heavy losses, Serbian pilots continued their combat flights. Major Nikolić took off with the task of intercepting NATO aircraft carrying out strikes against military targets in the Kosovo region. His MiG-29 was detected soon after takeoff.

NATO fighters intercepted the Serbian aircraft and launched a missile that severely damaged the MiG-29. At the last moment, Major Nikolić managed to activate the ejection system. He was thrown from the cockpit at high altitude and speed, suffering injuries from the force of the ejection.

Survival on the ground

Having descended by parachute onto the territory of Kosovo, Major Nikolić faced new dangers. He found himself in enemy territory, injured, with minimal survival equipment. He had to evade both the NATO patrols searching for surviving pilots and the KLA paramilitary formations that controlled parts of the terrain.

He spent some time moving across the terrain, trying to establish contact with Serbian forces. However, circumstances were against him — he was captured and held in captivity.

Captivity and return

The details of Major Nikolić's captivity are partly protected by military secrecy. What is known is that he endured harsh conditions and was released after the cessation of hostilities. He returned to Serbia as a man who had been through hell — shot down in the air, having survived the fall, wandered enemy terrain and survived captivity.

A pilot's honour

The story of Major Nikolić recalls the uncertain fate of pilots whose aircraft are shot down. While modern ejection systems give a pilot a chance to survive being shot down, what follows the ejection is often equally dangerous — a fall onto enemy territory, cold, hunger, injury, and the uncertainty of whether your own side will rescue you or the enemy will capture you.

Major Nikolić showed incredible endurance and will to live. He did not give up, he did not give in, he fought for every day and every step. His story is a story of the human spirit that refuses to break even in the most difficult circumstances.

Legacy

Major Nebojša Nikolić was decorated for the courage he showed during the war. His story has remained less well known than the stories of the pilots who were killed, but in its own way it is equally heroic. To survive being shot down, ejection, the fall and captivity requires a different kind of courage — not the momentary, explosive courage of combat, but the quiet, persistent courage of survival.

He is living proof that the Serbian pilots of 1999 were far more than statistics — they were men of flesh and blood who fought, fell, and, when fate allowed, returned. Lest it be forgotten.
