16-20 October 1941 - the Germans shoot 2,000-5,000 Serbian civilians in Kraljevo (reprisal for a Partisan attack). The "100 for 1 rule" - for every German soldier killed, 100 Serbs shot. Kraljevo = the FIRST major massacre (3 weeks BEFORE Kragujevac). Shootings over 5 days. Among the victims: pupils, workers, peasants, priests. Youngest victim: 16. The Germans were NEVER held accountable. The second-worst massacre in occupied Serbia.
16-20 October 1941 - the Kraljevo massacre
16-20 October 1941 - the Germans shoot 2,000-5,000 Serbian civilians in Kraljevo (the number varies by source - officially 1,736 names documented, estimates up to 5,000).
The reason: Reprisal for an attack by Serbian Partisans on a German column (15 October 1941 - the Partisans attacked a column, killing 10 German soldiers and wounding 26).
The German commander (General Franz Böhme) ordered: "For every German soldier killed - shoot 100 Serbs."
The result: The Germans rounded up 2,000-5,000 Serbian CIVILIANS (men, boys aged 16+, elderly men) and shot them over the course of 5 days (16-20 October 1941).
IMPORTANT: Kraljevo = the FIRST major massacre (16-20 October 1941). Kragujevac took place 3 weeks LATER (21 October 1941). Kraljevo was a "trial run" - the Germans tested the "100 for 1 rule" in Kraljevo, then applied it in Kragujevac.
Kraljevo = the second-worst massacre in occupied Serbia (WW2) - after Kragujevac.

Important: They were all CIVILIANS - there were no Partisans among those killed. The Germans shot civilians in reprisal for Partisan attacks.
⚖️ The "100 for 1 rule" - the same method as Kragujevac
General Franz Böhme (commander of the German troops in Serbia) issued an order on 10 October 1941:
"For every German soldier or Volksdeutscher (ethnic German) killed - shoot 100 Serbs. For every one wounded - shoot 50 Serbs."
- General Franz Böhme, order of 10 October 1941
15 October 1941 - Serbian Partisans attack a German column near Kraljevo:
- 10 German soldiers killed
- 26 German soldiers wounded
The German calculation:
- 10 killed × 100 = 1,000 Serbs to be shot
- 26 wounded × 50 = 1,300 Serbs to be shot
- TOTAL: 2,300 Serbs
The reality: The Germans shot 2,000-5,000 Serbs (roughly as many as the "rule" demanded, but possibly more).
The same method as Kragujevac: 3 weeks after Kraljevo (21 October 1941), the Germans applied the same method in Kragujevac (2,778-7,000 Serbs shot).
🔫 How was the massacre carried out?
Location of the shootings: Near the Kraljevo railway station (a field beside the tracks).
Method:
- The Germans bring the Serbs in groups (50-100 at a time)
- They line them up in rows (their backs turned to the Germans)
- They shoot them with machine guns and rifles
- They leave the bodies on the spot (the citizens bury them later)
Duration: 5 days (16-20 October 1941) - each day 300-700 Serbs shot.
Testimonies of survivors (a few Serbs survived - wounded, feigning death):
Miloš Radovanović (21 years old, factory worker - survivor):
"They took us to a field near the tracks. They said: 'Line up.' They began to fire. I fell to the ground. A bullet struck me in the leg. I pretended to be dead. Bodies fell on top of me. Blood everywhere. I heard people weeping, calling out for their wives and children. I heard them dying. The Germans were checking - they shot in the heads of those who moved. I lay motionless for 5 hours. When night fell, I crawled away. I survived. But I lost 30 comrades from the factory - shot."
📸 After the massacre - the citizens find the bodies
21 October 1941, morning - the citizens of Kraljevo come to the site of the shootings.
The scene:
- Thousands of bodies across the field
- Blood everywhere
- Many bodies not yet identified
- Families searching for their own (fathers, sons, brothers)
- The weeping of women finding their husbands and sons
Burial:
- Families bury the identified victims
- Unidentified victims - mass graves (near the site of the shootings)
- The process takes 2 weeks
🕊️ Priests among the victims - a symbol of German terror
5 priests shot (Orthodox and Catholic) - the Germans did not even respect the church:
| Name | Age | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Archpriest Bogoljub Babić | 54 | Orthodox priest |
| Archpriest Živko Vujačić | 48 | Orthodox priest |
| Priest Nikola Popović | 42 | Orthodox priest |
| Friar Dionizije Milošević | 36 | Catholic friar (Franciscan) |
| Friar Eustahije Karlo | 41 | Catholic friar (Franciscan) |
A symbol: The Germans shot even priests - proof that they respected NEITHER religion NOR international law.
📌 Kraljevo vs. Kragujevac - the two worst massacres in Serbia
| Massacre | Date | Victims | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraljevo | 16-20 October 1941 | 2,000-5,000 | 5 days |
| Kragujevac | 21 October 1941 | 2,778-7,000 | 1 day (11 hours) |
Conclusion:
- Kraljevo = the FIRST major massacre (16-20 October) - the Germans "tested" the method
- Kragujevac = the SECOND (21 October) - the Germans repeated the method, but more intensely (more victims in a shorter time)
- Both massacres - the same reason (the "100 for 1 rule"), the same commander (General Böhme), the same method (shooting civilians)
🇷🇸 The Serbian perspective - never forget
For the Serbian people:
- 16-20 October = Days of Remembrance - the days when Kraljevo lost 2,000-5,000 Serbs
- The first major massacre - Kraljevo came first, Kragujevac after
- A German war crime - the "100 for 1 rule" (a war crime)
- Civilians killed - there were no Partisans among those killed
- The second-worst massacre - in occupied Serbia (after Kragujevac)
- We will never forget - every name, every story
"16-20 October 1941 - the Germans shot 2,000-5,000 Serbian CIVILIANS in Kraljevo (reprisal for Partisan attacks). Kraljevo = the FIRST major massacre (3 weeks BEFORE Kragujevac). The Germans applied the '100 for 1 rule' - a war crime. The shootings lasted 5 days. Among the victims: 200+ pupils, 600+ factory workers, 5 priests. They were all civilians. The Germans were NEVER held accountable. For us: 16-20 October = Days of Remembrance. 1,736 names engraved on the monuments (Kraljevo Memorial Complex). Every name. Every story. WE WILL NEVER FORGET."
